Windows 11's Latest Update Is Bricking PCs—Here's What You Need to Know
If you woke up this morning to a Windows 11 PC that won't boot, you're not alone.
Microsoft's latest Patch Tuesday update has turned into an absolute disaster. Reports are flooding in from users worldwide: blue screens of death, failed boot loops, and systems that simply refuse to start. And here's the kicker—Microsoft has officially confirmed the problem.
What's Actually Happening
The January 2026 cumulative update (KB5035942) is causing some PCs to fail during or after the update process. The symptoms vary:
- Boot loops where your PC restarts endlessly
- Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with cryptic error codes
- Systems stuck on "Undoing changes" for hours
- BitLocker recovery screens appearing unexpectedly
The worst part? There's no consistent pattern. Some identical machines update fine while others brick completely.
Who's Affected
Microsoft says the issue primarily impacts:
- PCs with certain third-party security software
- Systems using specific storage drivers
- Devices with particular BIOS configurations
Basically, they're still figuring it out.
What You Should Do Right Now
If you haven't updated yet:
- Go to Settings → Windows Update
- Click "Pause updates" for at least 7 days
- Wait for Microsoft to release a fix
If you're already stuck:
- Boot into Safe Mode (hold Shift while clicking Restart)
- Roll back the update via Settings → Recovery
- If that fails, use a Windows recovery USB
The Bigger Problem
This isn't an isolated incident. Microsoft's update quality has been slipping for years. Remember the August update that broke printers? Or the October patch that killed Wi-Fi? At some point, we have to ask: is automatic updating doing more harm than good?
For now, the safest approach is to delay updates by a week or two. Let other people be the guinea pigs.
Stay tuned—I'll update this post when Microsoft releases a fix.
